March 2008

With 2 bull sales now in the books and fall breeding finished our focus now turns to the spring herd. Thanks to an aggressive resynchronization program 2/3 of the spring herd calved in February with the remainder calving in March. Calving also means that the 2007 born spring heifers were carcass scanned and weighed for yearling weights. With the analysis of that data two cows have become standouts in the herd. J218 is a Precision daughter that traces back to the Traveler 93 cow from Gardiner Angus. She has been in our embryo program for 2 years and we now have enough data to realize that she is truly something special. Her record is 3@99 for birth, 3@111 at weaning, 3@108 at yearling, 8@110 for IMF, and 8@106 for ribeye. In the spring group are a daughter by 1407 and a daughter by Predestined and sons by 1407, 2-878, Predestined, and In Focus all of whom had strong scans. J218’s first natural calf by 1407 was Rita 470 who was the top heifer at weaning, yearling while being the top IMF and ribeye of her contemporary group. Her ratios were as follows: birth 100, weaning 113, yearling 120, IMF 146, and ribeye 119. 470’s first natural calf is a heifer by Solution who in turn was the top heifer at weaning, 3rd high at yearling, and was the highest IMF and ribeye in the group. She scanned with 8.81 % IMF and an 11.4 inch ribeye. Her ratios are equally impressive: birth 97, weaning 123, yearling 111, IMF 140, and ribeye 128. She has a birth to yearling EPD spread of 0.1 to 98, a .84 IMF and .79 ribeye EPD, and most exciting she has 63 $Beef. She is truly the culmination of focused selection for growth, carcass, and phenotype. She will enter our embryo program as a third generation donor this spring. With this information in mind, we are excited to announce that we are offering choice of J218 or her daughter 470 in our annual female sale on June 7, 2008. It is only because of good embryo production and our dedication to offer our best that we are able to part with these females. Our loss will be someone’s gain.

This year we will also be offering all of the 2002 and 2003 born females. From a production standpoint, this is a very strong group of cattle. Conditions have been dry, feed has been short, and the cattle are likely to be thinner than most years. However, the calves on the ground are growing well and production appears to be unaffected. Good rains thus far in 2008 have us optimistic for more normal pasture conditions by April and May. Stay posted for more newsletter updates as we get closer to the sale.
